Above is a photograph of large scale drawing which i created for our three day drawing task. I created my drawing with mixed media such as paint, pencil, ink, fine liner pen and oil bar. Although the brief said that the drawing had to be 1m by 1m I decide to stretch the boundaries in terms of the proportions of length to the drawing. The brief gave us a limited pallet of black and white so I experimented with tonal variations, and the thickness and textures of the different media. I feel that by collaging various images of canal street together and by filling the whole area I have given my drawing a strong composition, as the eye of the viewer isn’t drawn to a single section.
My first workshop on the course was the digital image workshop in which rather than creating a finish piece I created a range of samples, the above image being one. I found the difficulty with the compositions of my images as well as being selective about the things I chose to incorporate into the image. However by selecting sections from a range of photographic images and collaging them into a single image I feel I was able to improve the compositions of my images. I also decided it would be more interesting if I generated more drawings to scan in, allowing me more information to work from.
My current workshop on the course is 3D construction, which I am extremely enjoying. I find the workshop interesting and I am enjoying learning the new skills which garment construct offers me, such as pattern cutting and using the industrial machines . I’m also finding it easier to generate idea’s through the workshop fashion topic. At the moment I’m working on constructing the dress on the left hand side of the page and I aim to construct two garments, one out of fabric and one out of paper. I also enjoy the aspect of working to a final piece in the workshop rather than creating loads of samples as I find it easier working to an end piece. I like how unlike commercial fashion these garments have a great amount of structure and how the boundaries can be pushed in terms of how wearable the garments are. I also like the aspect of the dress being more of a piece of art rather than a piece of clothing.
I enjoy photography and feel photographs can act as a great source of information to work from, as I think that photographs can be the easiest way of gathering a large amount of information from one subject matter. Here is a photograph I tuck of Canal Street, this particular photograph has been inspiring to me throughout my project, such as the street lamp which inspired my dress. Although l like to use photographs as a source of research I also appreciate that they can stand as a piece on their own I feel that the photograph is strong and successfully reflects the atmosphere of Canal Street in the daytime. I also like the variety of colours and the brightness of the image.
